Material Research

Chair Fabrics

We decided to research materials that would be best suited for our product and after researching materials from the following site http://www.bhg.com/decorating/lessons/basics/guide-to-upholstery-fabrics/   We decided to research Olefin and Cotton/Cotton Blend more extensivley because, they were the two materials that were best suited for what we see the chair to be used for.

These are some advantages and disadvantages of cotton/cotton blend and olefin to help us decide which of the two materials would be best suited for our product.

Cotton/Cotton Blend

Advantages
  1. Non-Allergenic
  2. Soft
  3. Breathable

  3. Wrinkles
  4. Fades In Sunlight
  5. Easily Stainable

Olefin

Advantages

Research for group decision

Research

We have decided that the best product to make is an multi-media/artists chair, which will have multiple features built in. It is designed to help with work by including a tablet that can be used for everything from drawing to taking notes.

I will be researching different types of chairs that will be best suited to fit all of our desired features on without looking like they're all crammed together whilst also being comfortable for the user to sit on for long periods of time.

These are the different types of chair that we could potentially use for our product:

Office Chair
Gaming Chair
BeanBag
10 Downing Street Guard Chair
Armchair
Ball Chair
Bubble Chair
Easy Chair
Massage Chair
Sofa

Prices

Office Chair

Price - £40 - £110

Gaming Chair

Price - £35 - £200

BeanBag

Price - £20 - £60

10 Downing Street Chair

Price - N/A

Armchair

Price - £60 - £180

Ball Chair

Price - £500 - £600

Bubble Chair

Price - £500 - £800

Easy Chair

Price - £20 - £80

Massage Chair

Price - £1,000 +

Sofa

Price - £200 - £700

When we have our next meeting we will narrow these choices to 3 and look over the research and discuss as a group which would be the best type of chair that we could use.

Features

Listed below are just some of the features that we could include in our product depending on what type of chair we choose we might not be able to fit all of them on.

  • Speakers
  • Side Tables
  • USB Ports
  • Multimedia Tablet
  • Apple Pen Holder
  • Audio Controls
  • Wireless/Bluetooth
  • Bottle Holder
  • LED Light

Speakers

Speakers are an important feature for out chair because if they are used for educational purposes then people will be using them to watch videos or even to play music from. I found that the best speakers we could use in the chair are 2.0 stereo speakers. They would have to be good quality to ensure that people using them would be able to hear what they were listening to clearly. The 2.0 stereo speakers would give us that effect.

Research for my idea

The Project

My Ideas

Originally I came up with three ideas for this project. The first one was an improved Laptop case/sleeve, my second idea was some sort of fitness device/clothing that would help people achieve their goals when exercising and my last idea was to go back to the retro Ipod and give it some added features that would make it more appealing for people to use.

My Best Idea

The Idea that I thought was best and would have the potential if it was created and brought into the real world is the laptop case/sleeve. I chose this idea because of the wide target audience that it could potentially appeal to, the main target audience will be students and business men/women but this product also has the potential to surpass that target audience and appeal to people who use their laptop on a daily bases!

Features I Could Include

  • Waterproof
  • Hard shell outer casing for extra protection
  • Battery in the case to charge your device on the go
  • USB slots to charge your phone or any other devices
  • Compartments to store a mouse and keyboard safely
  • Straps so users could wear it as a backpack or messenger bag
  • Improved security so only the user would be able to access the bag
  • Speakers so the user can use them to play music or help give a presentation
  • Briefcase design so it is more suited to business people

Research

Price

The most expensive laptop case/sleeve that I found was £210. It is called Booq Cobra Pack https://www.amazon.co.uk/CPK2-BLK-Business-Backpack-MacBook-Laptop/dp/B00KND9HI0/ref=sr_1_1?tag=mwgenius-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1465993807&sr=8-1

I want to include aspects from all of these cases/sleeve into my idea to essentially make a case/sleeve that would appeal to everyone. Depending on what features people wanted to have in their case/sleeve would depend on the price, if they just wanted a standard case with no features I would price the case somewhere between £15-£20. But if they wanted they wanted the case along with some of the features I would price the case/sleeve at £40-£60 (depending on what features the user requires, max of 3 features) Then if the user wanted the case/sleeve with all the features included then I would price it at £65-£150, this makes the case quite expensive if the user wishes to have all of the features included but it's not the most expensive case/sleeve out there.

These prices also will depend on how much I can obtain the required features for the case/sleeve for so they may differ from what I originally said.

Design

These are some laptop cases/sleeves that I have found online that have a good design that I could get inspiration from when designing my case/sleeve.
